Welcome to
Children of War, the
Anime
Fanlistings Network approved fanlisting for the Japanese anime and manga series
New Mobile Report
Gundam Wing, or
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, as it is officially known as in the United States.
The romanization of its original Japanese title is
Shin Kidousenki Gundam Wing, and in Japan, it
is also known as
Gundam W for short. Around here, we like to keep things simple, so we just call
the series
Gundam Wing. This fanlisting is also for the anime OVA/movie sequel
Endless Waltz.

The
Gundam franchise is extremely popular in Japan, and
Gundam Wing was no exception. In
1979, the first
Gundam series,
Mobile Suit Gundam, aired in Japan. It actually bombed and
was ended prematurely. However, the series gained popularity during reruns, and the franchise took off
from there. Unlike most of the earlier
Gundam series, which were set in the Universal Century and
of which I know nothing,
Gundam Wing is set in an alternate universe, the After Colony.
The
Gundam Wing TV series was 49 episodes long and aired from 1995 through 1996. In the first
half of 1997, the three-part OVA series sequel
Endless Waltz was released, ending the
Gundam
Wing story. In 1998, the OVAs were combined into a movie with additional footage, a new theme
song, and a different ending sequence.
In addition to the anime, there are several manga series, including alternate versions of the anime
story, possible sequels to the TV series, bridges between the TV series and
Endless Waltz, the
prequel known as
Episode Zero, and a manga sort-of-sequel to
Endless Waltz known as
Preventer 5. There are also several radio dramas, some of which became manga series (e.g.,
Blind Target). Like any good anime series, it was rich in merchandise (including Gundam models,
Gundam toys, CDs, artbooks, pencil boards, cards, and posters), and, of course, rabid fandom!
In 2010, a serialized novel called
Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop began running in the Japanese
magazine
Gundam Ace.
Frozen Teardrop was a sequel to
Gundam Wing, taking place many
years in the future. It was written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, the head scriptwriter of the
Gundam
Wing anime series.
