When she first appears in the Sailor Moon series, Tenoh Haruka is a 16-year-old high school
student in the 10th grade. Haruka is the reincarnation of Sailor Uranus
(セーラーウラヌス), the
soldier of the sky. Uranus is one of the four Sailor Senshi of the Outer Solar System ("Outer Senshi").
Her main duty as an Outer Senshi is to protect the galaxy from outside invaders. In this life, her
partner is Kaioh Michiru, the reincarnation of Sailor Neptune.
In the first anime series, Haruka is the epitome of "cool." She's masculine and tomboyish, despite being
very pretty. She wears male clothing because she wants to; she plays and dominates in sports normally
reserved for men; and she speaks and acts like a boy (even using the masculine "boku" for "I"). She is
passionate about her hobbies, namely motor sports, though in junior high she played a number of other
sports (football, track and field, and hang gliding) to keep herself from being bored. Her dream is to
be a professional racer. Sometimes sharp and insensitive, she does not hesitate to say what she thinks.
She is also frequently rather arrogant. Nonethless, she comes off as very charming and sophisticated.
She generally carries herself as an adult, with adult sensibilities and adult tastes; she tends to view
girls just one year younger than her as "cute kids." Haruka also likes to tease and flirt with girls.
As Sailor Uranus, she is a powerful fighter. Her duties as a Sailor Senshi are extremely important to
her, and she would do anything to ensure the success of her missions, even die. She tries to separate
her emotions from her actions. As such, she can come off as ruthless, cold, and unfeeling as Sailor
Uranus or as Haruka when it comes to soldier-related matters. Independent, she tends to view problems
as needing to be solved by her and Michiru alone, without help or interference from others.
Manga Haruka is a bit different from anime Haruka. Manga Haruka is not as tomboyish as anime Haruka,
as she will frequently wear dresses and feminine clothes. Actually, Haruka's gender circumstances in
the manga are unclear. She initially disguises herself as a male student to infiltrate Mugen Gakuen,
and she looks convincingly like a man. Takeuchi has said that only women can be Sailor Senshi, but
Sailor Neptune says that Sailor Uranus is both a man and a woman, with the strengths of each. What
this means is never explained, but I interpret it as being spiritual, rather than physical; either
way, Haruka's physical gender is obviously female for most of the manga. Haruka is not as much of a
flirt in the manga as she is in the anime. She also tends to be more selfish and arrogant in her
attitude; especially in the manga, Haruka will often say exactly what is on her mind, no matter how
harsh, without apologies, often to Michiru's chagrin. On the other hand, while Haruka in the anime
is quite protective of those whom she cares about, manga Haruka seems to be even more protective.
