The
Sailor Moon musicals (also called "Seramyu" for short) are live-action theatrical programs
that are very loosely based on the
Sailor Moon anime and manga.
The musicals originally ran from 1993 until 2005 in Japan, with performances usually in the summer and
winter (sometimes spring). Almost every year had a different musical, but in between seasons, there
were often revisions made to the current musical's story; these revised musicals were called "kaiteiban."
Additionally, later musicals borrowed songs and stories from earlier musicals.
Uranus and Neptune are more serious characters in the earlier musicals. In later musicals, their roles
are somewhat bigger, and they are much closer to the other Sailor Senshi, mirroring the manga more than
the anime. Their relationship with each other, though, seems to reflect the intimacy of the anime,
particularly in the
SailorStars musicals and afterwards.
In 2013, Seramyu began a new run of musicals with French titles and all-female casts. The first
musical,
La Reconquista, covered the first anime season/manga arc. The second musical,
Petite Etrangere, was based on
Sailor Moon R/the
Black Moon arc. In 2015,
the third musical,
Un Nouveau Voyage, introduced Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn and covered
Sailor Moon S/the manga
Infinity arc.
This musical (the title meaning
Usagi, Road to Becoming a Soldier of Love) is based loosely on
parts of
Sailor Moon S. In this musical, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune appear for the first
time on stage. Their civilian forms, Tenoh Haruka and Kaioh Michiru, are shown only once, though it's
an amusing scene. They have one duet, "Chobi! Uranus to Neptune." There was no kaiteiban for this
musical.
The actress for Sailor Uranus was
Kimura Sanae. The actress for Sailor Neptune was
Sakamoto
Kahoru.
This is the second
Sailor Moon S musical. However, neither this musical nor its kaiteiban
were ever released on video.
The actress for Sailor Uranus was
Kimura Sanae. The actress for Sailor Neptune was
Tomida
Chikei.
This musical's title is translated to
Dream Soldiers, Love is Eternal. Sailor Uranus and
Sailor Neptune, along with Sailor Pluto, appear only in their senshi forms in these musicals.
They have one main song, called "Fukkatsu! KURAISHISU Yurusumaji." In this musical, they mostly
try to save Chibi-usa, fight against the Dead Moon Circus, and try to kill the girl they believe
to be Sailor Saturn. The kaiteiban was called
Yume Senshi Ai Eien ni... Saturn Fukkatsu Hen.
The actress for Uranus was
Kimura Sanae. The actress for Neptune was
Fuji Miyuki.
This musical is based on a mixture of the
SailorStars manga and anime. Galaxia, with her
Animamates (some created only for the musical), is after the Sailor Crystals on Earth. Haruka
and Michiru have a few nice scenes in this musical, such as their opening piano and violin duet;
their song with Pluto; and their deaths, which have romantic overtones. There was a kaiteiban
for this musical.
The actress for Sailor Uranus was
Kimura Sanae, and Sailor Neptune was played by
Tahara
Hiroko.
In the
Eien Densetsu (
Eternal Legend) musical, Galaxia, the Animamates, and Queen
Beryl (as well as Zoisite and Kunzite in the first version) are after the Sailor Senshi's Star
Seeds. At the beginning of the musical, Haruka and Michiru appear on the set of a TV movie
playing the roles of a prince and princess who die in battle. (They are replaced by Hotaru in
the kaiteiban.) As for the main story, they do a lot of running off by themselves. Eventually
they pretend to ally with Galaxia, giving up their Star Seeds for the bracelets, and kill Pluto
and Saturn, singing a short, but eerie duet, "Orurean no Sei Senshi - Uranus - Neptune no
Uragiri." They then turn on Galaxia, but, unable to defeat her, are soon killed off. They die
in a similar fashion to their
SailorStars anime death. Later they are revived by a good
Sailor Galaxia and join Eternal Sailor Moon in defeating Chaos. The kaiteiban is subtitled
The
Final First Stage, as it marks the end of ANZA playing Sailor Moon and the graduation
of all the actors from their roles.
The actresses were
Kimura Sanae as Uranus and
Tahara Hiroko as Neptune.
In the
Shin Densetsu Kourin (
Beginning of a New Legend) musical, an all-new Sailor
Senshi cast takes the stage. The enemies are Galaxia, Queen Beryl, and the Amazon Trio. Neptune
and Uranus mainly assist as part of the Outer Senshi. The four Outer Senshi have a group song
together ("Makin' For the Right"), as well as have a song with Chibi-usa and Usagi. Uranus and
Neptune, along with the other Sailor Senshi, are eventually revived and help Eternal Sailor Moon
defeat Galaxia's henchmen and Chaos. There was no kaiteiban for this musical.
Takagi Nao played Sailor Uranus and
Shimada Sara played Sailor Neptune.
In
Kaguya Shima Densetsu (
Legend of Kaguya Island), Haruka and Michiru visit Kaguya
Island with the other Sailor Senshi. This musical is not based on either the anime or the manga,
and it has an all-new story with all-new enemies. There was a kaiteiban for this musical.
Takagi Nao played Haruka/Uranus.
Shimada Sara played Michiru/Neptune in the first
version of the musical, and
Asami Yuhka played Neptune for the kaiteiban.
The
Last Dracul Overture musical is based somewhat on the
Sailor Moon S: Usagi Ai no Senshi
e no Michi musical and has some of the same songs. It has both original characters - vampires -
and
Sailor Moon S's Professor Tomoe. Tomoe is after the Sailor Senshi's Star Seeds and the
ginzuishou so that he can create the perfect homunculus. He allies himself with the vampire Dracul
to achive his goals, but Dracul has other plans. The most notable Haruka and Michiru scene is when,
after Neptune has been taken over by the vampires, Uranus gives a passionate speech to Neptune about
Neptune. There was no kaiteiban for this musical.
Takagi Nao played Haruka/Uranus, and
Asami Yuhka played Michiru/Neptune.
Transylvania no Mori (
Transylvania's Forest) continues the story from
Last Dracul
Overture. Dracul's daughter, Bloody Vampire Dracul, is introduced. The musical has a lot of
Christian references built into the plot. The most interesting Haruka and Michiru scenes are when
Haruka listens to Michiru's violin; Neptune's speech to an evil Uranus, which is a direct response
to Uranus's speech from
Last Dracul Jokyoku; and Neptune's reaction at Uranus's death.
Takagi Nao played Haruka/Uranus, and
Asami Yuhka played Michiru/Neptune.
The final chapter in the
Last Dracul series. Another one I haven't seen. There was no
kaiteiban for this musical.
Takagi Nao played Haruka/Uranus, and
Asami Yuhka played Michiru/Neptune.
This musical (
Birth of the Princess of Darkness, Black Lady) is a retelling of
Sailor Moon
R, using the Black Moon storyline for the first time. (There was no previous
Sailor Moon R
musical.) It therefore features as enemies the Black Moon family, the Ayakashi Sisters (Beruche only
appears in the revision), and Black Lady. Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn appear as Sailor Senshi
from the future; in their time, Crystal Tokyo has just been destroyed by the Black Moon, and the four
soldiers must return to the past Tokyo to find Chibi-usa. The Outer Senshi have a group song called
"Broken MÖBIUS." The kaiteiban was subtitled
Wakusei Nemesis no Nazo.
Takagi Nao played Sailor Uranus, and
Asami Yuhka played Sailor Neptune.
This is the 10th anniversary special, celebrating the
Sailor Moon manga and anime series' 10th
birthday. It uses a lot of songs from previous musicals, but the story is new. The Sailor Senshi
attend a wrestling match, and while there, the enemy attacks them, wanting the ginzuishou. There was
no kaiteiban.
Takagi Nao played Tenoh Haruka/Sailor Uranus, and
Asami Yuhka played Kaioh Michiru/Sailor
Neptune.
This musical (
Infinity Academy ~ Mistress Labyrinth) is based on the
Infinity arc of
the manga and the
Sailor Moon S anime. It features the Death Busters and Mistress 9. Uranus
and Neptune have two duets, "Harsh! Saint Cry!!" and "Destined Couple." They also have a song with
Pluto, "Broken MÖBIUS (Talisman version)."
For the first run,
Takagi Nao played Tenoh Haruka/Sailor Uranus and
Asami Yuhka played
Kaioh Michiru/Sailor Neptune. In the kaiteiban,
Uchida Asako played Sailor Uranus and
Inami
Tomoko (who played Mistress 9 in the first run) played Sailor Neptune.
This musical's title translates to
Starlights, Falling Stars Legend. I haven't seen it yet,
but it involves the Sailor Starlights, the Animamates, and the Dark Kingdom, so it sounds like it's
based on the
Eien Densetsu musicals. Asami Yuhka returned to play Jaedite in this musical.
Uchida Asako played Sailor Uranus, and
Inami Tomoko played Sailor Neptune.
I believe that
Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin is a revision of
Starlights Ryuusei Densetsu, except
that Princess Kakyuu appears. The enemies are Galaxia, the Animamates, Queen Beryl, Kunzite, and
three new Dark Kingdom minions. This musical is based on
Eien Densetsu. The most notable
Haruka and Michiru scenes are when they "join" Galaxia, a la the
SailorStars anime and the
Eien Densetsu musicals, but with different dialogue, and then their death scene, also with
different dialogue. There's also a tiny cute scene of Haruka being irritated/jealous at Taiki's
flattering Michiru.
Uchida Asako played Sailor Uranus, and
Inami Tomoko played Sailor Neptune.
A new version of the
Kaguya Shima Densetsu musical. The Sailor Team are on break from school,
but Ami, Setsuna, Haruka, and Michiru want the Sailor Senshi to work on training. Mamoru hears about
a place called Kaguya Island, and the Sailor Senshi decide to go there to hunt for jewels. On Kaguya,
they got caught up in a plot to take Usagi's ginzuishou. There was a kaiteiban, which was the final
musical for the
Sailor Moon series.
Nakayama Akiko (who played Sailor Starmaker in the
Ryuusei Densetsu and
Kakyuu-ouhi
musicals) played Sailor Uranus, and
Ooyama Takayo played Sailor Neptune.
This musical is based on
Sailor Moon S/the
Infinity arc and features the Death Busters
as the villains. Uranus and Neptune have at least one duet together called "Eye of the Storm."
Shiotsuki Shu played Sailor Uranus, and
Fujioka Sayaka played Sailor Neptune.
