The planet Uranus was first discovered by accident by British astronomer Sir William Herschel in 1781. Originally, the planet was named "Georgium Sidus" in honor of Herschel's patron, King George III, but it was later renamed "Herschel." However, because the previous two names were so unpopular, it was again renamed for a final time to "Uranus."

Uranus has a diameter of approximately 32,000 miles. Because it is 1.8 billion miles away from the sun - it is the seventh furthest planet outwards - it takes 84 years for Uranus to orbit around the star. Its rotational period is about 16 hours; the planet has an unusual inclination of 98 degrees so that it spins almost totally on its side. The approximate temperature on Uranus is -220 degrees Celsius. Uranus has 13 known rings and five main satellites. The two main satellites furthest from the planet are Oberon and Titania; they were discovered in 1787. Umbriel and Ariel were discovered in 1851, and the main satellite closet to Uranus, called Miranda, was found in 1948.

Neptune was first discovered when perturbations in Uranus's orbit were noticed. In 1846, French astronomer Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier used mathematics alone to determine that another planet beyond Uranus was the cause of these perturbations. Later that year, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovered the new planet; its position was one degree off of Le Verrier's prediction, but this was due to the time and position of Neptune's orbit.

Neptune is the eighth planet outwards from the sun, about 2.8 billion miles away. Neptune takes 165 years to revolve around the sun and 16 hours to rotate on its axis. The diameter of the planet is about 31,000 miles. Its volume is about 72 times that of Earth, and its mass is about 17 times the mass of Earth. Neptune's density is 1.54 gm/cc. Its inclination of orbit is 1.77 degrees. Temperatures on Neptune are extremely low, estimated to be at -200 degrees Celsius. Before Pluto became a dwarf planet, from 1979 to 1999, Neptune was the planet furthest from the sun.

Neptune has thirteen known satellites. The major one is Triton, which was discovered in 1846 by William Lassell; it has a diameter of 3,700 kilometers and revolves around Neptune in the opposite direction of the planet's rotation.
